By now you know that U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham teased the idea of federal legislation to ban abortion except in the cases where the life / health of the mother or baby was in question, rape, and incest. While Graham's proposal was absolutely brilliant, the response by his fellow Republicans was idiotic and / or a reflection of their dishonesty. Instead of either backing Graham OR remaining silent, they made a big stink about it. It baffles me.
Graham offered a strategy. He knows that the party line is that abortion should be a states rights issue. That is all well and good. But Democrats are pushing the abortion angle HARD in the mid terms. It is abortion absolutists versus outright baby killers. The pro-abortion side wants Republicans to be on record as being against abortion in all cases. Graham put the onus on Democrats to admit that they want the privilege of having an abortion in all cases. The issue comes down to people who would have a choice to make. Should abortion be allowed in every case? Forget the legislation. NEITHER side is going to win and if there are Republican Senators that don't understand basic strategy, they don't need to be Senators. They aren't even smart enough to be janitors.
Hard core, pro life Senators should have simply said that they believe the issue is a states rights issue and kept their mouths shut. Instead, they add fuel to the fire, and give Democrats an easy out. Democrats don't have to commit to anything. Something needs to be said and it doesn't matter whose feelings get hurt:
When a woman willingly has sex, she makes a conscious choice to do something that has consequences. The major consequence is pregnancy. When women decide to have the baby, they expect society to help in the medical costs of having the baby; if she can't afford the baby she will look to the father and / or the government. The bottom line is IF it is her body, her baby, and it's her decision, then it should be the woman's problem. What in the Hell are the men of this country doing, sitting on their asses, being sperm donors and financial revenue generating resources for these babies? The United States leads the world in the number of people doing illegal drugs and people serving time in prison. Roughly 29 percent of the world is Chinese. Only 4 percent or so of the world's population is American. Yet we have more people in prison and more people on drugs than communist China and they have almost SIX TIMES as many people living there as we do here!
“The strongest predictor of whether a person will end up in prison, is that they were raised by a single parent”. C.C. Harper and S.S. McLanahan, “Father Absence and Youth Incarceration”, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Assoc., San Francisco, CA, 1998
In 1996, 70% of inmates in state juvenile detention centers serving long sentences, were raised by single mothers. Wade Horn, “Why There Is No Substitute For Parents”, IMPRIMIS 26, NO.6, June, 1997
The impact of this attitude that women somehow "own" babies and the only purpose men serve are to be sperm donors and a financial revenue generating resource for the woman's decision is destroying the country. Consequently, the abortionists argue that if we kill these babies in the womb, they won't have the misfortune of growing up to be drug addicts and criminals in a broken home. If that's their argument, we should criminalize alcohol so that people don't get drunk and endanger society with drunk drivers. You can't follow the analogy?
The issue here is about responsibility and accountability. If you drink and drive and you hit someone's car, you have a consequence in front of you. If a woman willingly has sex and gets pregnant, there is a consequence. America was founded on this premise that a Creator bestows upon all of us a Right to Life. Academics can argue the legalities of whether or not that extends to victims of incest, rape, or if the mother or baby's life is at risk. What we should focus on is whether or not a woman should be held responsible and accountable for her decision. If a woman were held liable for her decision as to whether or not she wants to risk pregnancy and IF the fathers were held liable and responsible for not only financial costs, but the burden of rearing the children they bring into the world, we wouldn't be debating the abortion issue. But, leave it to stupid Republicans to take that discussion off the table so that the pro-abortion forces can focus on who is opposed to abortion in cases of rape, incest, or the health of the mother or child.
The real issue is a state's rights issue, but if the Democrats want to play political football with it, the Republicans should have played the game out and forced the pro-abortion forces to admit they want women to be able to make bad decisions and shielded from the consequences. Their body, their baby, their problem. Issue solved.
