Up until recent weeks when someone referred to me as a liberal those were fighting words and, if done in person, somebody’s butt was going to get kicked. When you don’t side with the right in lock step fashion you are a liberal; if you disagree with the left you are a racist or fascist. The easier way to put people into categories is to think that Democrat = liberal. Republican = conservative. Libertarian = pro pot party with limited government.
That is the perception and some may argue semantics along the way; however, if you believe in Liberty, Freedom and the Constitution as it was originally written and intended, you cannot pledge fealty to none of those labels. Let’s take a look at how the founders saw this:
“It has been observed by an honorable gentleman, that a pure democracy, if it were practicable, would be the most perfect government. Experience has proved, that no position in politics is more false than this. The ancient democracies, in which the people themselves deliberated, never possessed one feature of good government. Their very character was tyranny; their figure deformity.” Alexander Hamilton, Speech to Congress, June 21, 178
“The republican is the only form of government which is not eternally at open or secret war with the rights of mankind.” Thomas Jefferson, Letter to William Hunter, 1790
“…democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths”
James Madison, Father of the Constitution) Federalist Paper # 10.

A determined political science major would give you an equal number of pro-democracy quotes that the founders made. But, at the end of the day, we were guaranteed a REPUBLICAN FORM OF GOVERNMENT (Article IV Section 4 of the Constitution.) And the fact is, NEITHER the Republicans nor the Democrats support the foundational principles upon which the Republic rests. America was not founded as a “democracy” and in my next posting I will lay out for you what ALL the major parties are doing wrong.
