With July 4 just a few days away it seemed like a good idea to start helping the vets that keep the spirit of our independence alive. Thanking the moderator and administrator of this board for encouraging me to do this is where we begin. This is what its all about. Many people are computer challenged. Also it is hard to find something if you do not know exactly what you are looking for. With that in mind this is aimed at helping veterans and their families to find what they need.
There is all kinds of help out there for our country's veterans. There is help for education, employment, rehabilitation for the wounded, networking opportunities, and ways to get all kinds of discounts for every day needs. No one person knows all of the things out there. We can work together and keep adding to this subject. If you are a veteran or the family member looking for resources we will begin with the basics.
In order to begin accessing benefits you generally need a DD214. A DD214 is the separation notice the military gives a person upon their release from service. If you no longer have one you will have to get a replacement copy. You may also need some other information. That information is going to be the name, date of birth, branch of service, dates of service, and social security number of the veteran. You can always pay people to do things. I prefer doing it myself and saving money. And so it goes with getting a replacement DD214 if you don't have your original. www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records
Click on that link and it will explain how to get a copy of a DD214 and if you really do not understand computers they also have a way to click a link for the address you can write to. What is available to you if you are a veteran? Vets qualify for legal help, housing assistance, counseling, job training, employment counseling, substance abuse counseling, and many companies offer discounts to veterans just to name a few. Here again is another link that will begin to open a whole world up for you if you are looking into this. nvf.org/veteran-resources/
PM me if you have trouble with the links or need any kind of help with this. I will update this as often as possible to help maximize the ways you can get help if you are a veteran. Thank you for your service.
